TAMPA BAY (APRIL 27, 2019) – Hundreds of local children and their families congregated on the top level of the parking garage outside of Tampa’s West Shore Mall on Friday afternoon in anticipation of a private screening of Avengers: Endgame at AMC Theater with one of the area’s top sports icons, Buccaneers’ defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

The private viewing party is part of McCoy’s annual outreach program ‘McCoy Family Movie Night,’ which he hosts through the Gerald McCoy’s Patricia Diane Foundation. Children living in single-parent households around Tampa Bay are invited, along with their family members, to the premier at AMC West Shore 14 through six partner organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters and Metropolitan Ministries.

In addition to the premier, 'McCoy Family Movie Night’ also features a pre-film carnival on the top level of the parking garage outside the rear entrance to the mall. As the families arrived, they were treated to an exciting array of face painters, balloon artists, an inflatable bounce house and even a DJ to set a rocking atmosphere for the carnival experience. McCoy spent the afternoon posing for photographs and signing autographs, his anticipation for the premier just as strong as the children’s. Walter Allen of FOX13 News served as the program’s emcee.

After the carnival, all of the participants were given free movie tickets and food and drink vouchers for Avengers: Endgame, the latest installment in the ongoing Marvel movie series. McCoy, whose passion for Marvel movies is well-known, showcased Avengers: Infinity War to several hundred children during last year’s ‘McCoy Family Movie Night.’

Gerald McCoy’s Patricia Diane Foundation seeks to serve single-parent families and their children, providing them with ongoing assistance and special experiences. ‘McCoy Family Movie Night’ is one of several ongoing community outreach programs of the foundation that create these unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for single-parent families in Tampa Bay.

IMPACT

Currently, the Gerald McCoy’s Patricia Diane Foundation serves low-income single parents and their children throughout the McCoy Family’s communities throughout Tampa Bay, Dallas, Oklahoma, and Las Vegas.

NEED

Approximately 26% of children in the U.S. are being raised in single-parent households. In Florida alone, 79% of households headed by single mothers face ongoing poverty.

WHY?

Gerald’s mother (Patricia Diane McCoy) passed away suddenly and unexpectedly while Gerald was a freshman at the University of Oklahoma. Gerald knows first-hand what it is like to live with just one parent.
